YES!!! A total surprise to everyone!! Capcom has lifted the veil for one of their next big games that's likely to hit in 2010, Lost Planet 2!! The story picks up 10 years after the events of the first game. For those who played the first Lost Planet you'll remember that new technologies were developed to warm the planet of E.D.N. 3 allowing lush jungles and plantlife to flourish. The sequel features new jungle environments, new mechas, a new combat shield that can unfold and new akrid creatures.
Based on the interview and the gameplay footage it looks like the game will have 2-player online co-op or more. Towards the end of the trailer we see allies jumping on top of a new giant akrid creature that has a slimy body and lava-filled tentacles coming from its mouth. We also see in the beginning a team of 4 snow pirates getting off a boat. This implies 4-player co-op. In the interview the games' director says the story won't focus on one main character but several snow pirates. This certainly hints at co-op and multiplayer gameplay. It's the right direction for Capcom given that Resident Evil 5 features online co-op and Bionic Commando has multiplayer gameplay as well.
The game also lets players hitch a ride on top of mechas during combat. I would go so far as to guess that in multiplayer mode players will team up in their own snow pirate guilds and battle each other while fighting off the akrid at the same time! So it essentially becomes a three-way online showdown! Enough talking, just watch the damn trailer!
The entire trailer features all in-game footage and it looks great so far! It runs on Capcom's MT-Framework 2.0 engine. At this point it's unknown whether or not the characters from the first game will play a role in the story or if the sequel will start off fresh with an original cast.
Man, Capcom really has become one of my all time favorite game development studios. They've got Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Devil May Cry 4, Bionic Commando, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Street Fighter 4, Dead Rising 2, Resident Evil 5, Dark Void and now Lost Planet 2! They just keep on pumping out the goods!
